Redskins v. Patriots Week One Preseason

The Washington Redskins face the New England Patriots tonight in week one of the NFL  preseason.  The Washington Redskins  enter the 2018 NFL season a different team than the 2017 Redskins.  At the keynote position, the Redskins added QB Alex Smith, acquired via trade with Kansas City, takes the helm at quarterback from the departed Kirk Cousins, who left via free agency for the Minnesota Vikings.

The Redskins also boast a top quality draft, landing DT Da’Ron Payne and RB Derris Guice in the first two rounds of the NFL Draft.  Guice is expected to be the Redskins feature running back this season.  Defensively, the Redskins landed a steal in the fifth round of the draft, grabbing DT Tim Settle.  The Redskins expect Settle to make an immediate impact upfront with Payne and 2017 first rounder Jonathan Allen.   Payne, the first pick in the 2018 NFL Draft for the Redskins, will not play tonight due to injury.

There are several key position battle to keep an eye on tonight.  Behind Guice and third down back Chris Thompson, the final running back slots are wide open with battles between 2017 draft pick Samaje Perine, veteran Rob Kelley, Byron Marshall, who is having an excellent training camp, and Kapri Bibbs.  That is a battle to watch.  CB Fabian Moreau is wanting to make the Redskins look at him for a starting slot opposite Josh Norman.  He will battle with veteran signee Orlando Scandrick and Quinton Dunbar.  Keep an eye on 2017 second rounder Ryan Anderson.  Anderson is not assured a roster spot and needs to prove he was worth a second round draft last year.  Keep an eye on depth positions at wide receiver.  That battle will feature Maurice Harris, who is really having an outstanding camp, veteran Brian Quick, Robert Davis, and Mr Irrelevant, the last pick in the NFL Draft, Trey Quinn.

We will follow the Redskins v. Patriots game right here in this article.

QB Colt McCoy takes the field.  No Alex Smith tonight.  One guy we mentioned above to keep an eye on is WR Maurice Harris.  Harris catches the first pass.  On second set of downs, Harris grabs his second reception of the game.  Rookie RB Derrius Guice carries the ball for 3 yards on his first Redskins carry.  Redskins are forced to punt on their first possession.  McCoy was 3 for 3 for 24 yards on the opening drive.  The Pats go three and out on their first drive.  Nice coverage on the deep ball by Montae Nicholson.  Rookie draft pick Greg Stroman has a nice 25 yard return on the punt.  McCoy connects with a 20 yard slant to Robert Davis.   Guice with a power 4 yard run to follow the 25 yard gain.  Guice has 4 carries for 13 yards.  McCoy connects with Byron Marshall for a 25 yard TD reception.  Mccoy showing nice command of the offense.  He is 6 for 7 for 69 yards and 1 TD pass.  Big play for Marshall, as he has had a nice training camp and battle for a final running back spot.  DE Matt Iaonndids with a sack and the Pats are forced to punt again.  In two sets of downs, the Patriots have gained just 4 yards.  On the Redskins third possession, another grab by Robert Davis.  McCoy follows up with a nice dump off to FB Elijah Wellman.  Guice has a nice run called by on a holding penalty by Wellman, erasing a 34 yard dash.  Guice has minor injury on the play, but looks fine.  Trey Quinn misses a high pass and is down on the field.  Redskins are forced to kick a field goal and Dustin Hopkins nails a 52 yard field goal.

Patriots manage to get their first first down of the game. Nice pass break up by Danny Johnson.  Forces a Patriots punt.  Guice is being evaluated for a knee injury.  RB Samaje Perine picks up a first down on a 14 yard carry as he takes over for Guice.  McCoy dashes for 14 yards and a penalty on the Pats gives the Redskins a first down.  McCoy follow up a 17 yard pass to WR Cam Sims.  Serine coughs the ball up, but not a reviewable play.  Not a good sign for Perine, who has had fumble issues last year.  Under pressure, McCoy throws an incompletion on third down.  Redskins punt it away.  Redskins outgunning the Patriots in total yards 186-20. After two first downs, Pats are forced to punt again.  Keep an eye on Danny Johnson.  Maurice Harris returns the punt for 20 yards.  McCoy connects with WR Cam Sims for a 50 yard reception.  Sims really shows some nice moves after the catch.  Takes the ball down to the 2 yard line.  McCoy connects on a 2 yard TD pass to Maurice Harris on a nice roll out by McCoy.  Great patience by McCoy.  Redskins force the Patriots to put for the fifth time.  QB Kevin Hogan enters the game.  Nice game for Colt McCoy.
