Redskins Rookie Report Week Ten: Redskins defeat Bucs 16-3

Let’s take a look at the rookies for the Washington Redskins and the contributions they provide. We will be tracking this weekly.

CB Adonis Alexander: Alexander did not have any defensive snaps.

LB Shaun Dion Hamilton: Dion Hamilton has become a strong special teams player for the Redskins. Yesterday he participated in 13 special teams snaps. He did not play in any defensive snaps. He did not record a tackle. On the season, he has recorded 3 tackles.

C Casey Dunn: Dunn was active, but did not play.

CB Danny Johnson: Johnson was active and played in 18 defensive snap counts and 5 special team snap counts.  he had a rough going against Tampa, as Tampa QB Ryan Fitzpatrick targeted Johnson and completed more than 30 yards passing on the rookie.  Perhaps lack of confidence, but DC Greg Manusky had Johnson playing pretty far off receivers.  Johnson was replaced by fellow rookie Greg Stroman, who intercepted his first NFL pass.  Johnson is young, gaining valuable game experience, but is not ready for a starting role in anyway right now.

DL Daron Payne: Payne played in 42 snaps and continue to help anchor the defensive front with fellow Alabama vet Jonathan Allen.  Payne recorded 2 assists and had 1 QB hit.  For the season, Payne has 28 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 6 QB hits1 forced fumble, and 1 pass deflection.  Tampa did gouge Washington’s front for 103 rushing yards.  Just remember how young Payne and Allen are.  They are a big part of the reason this team is 6-3 and not 3-6.

DL Tim Settle: Settle appeared on the field for 11 defensive snaps and 7 special team snaps.  His playing time is limited due to the presence of Payne and Allen in the middle.  He has no recordable stats thus far.

CB Greg Stroman:  Storman came in relief for Danny Johnson, who Fitzpatrick was targeting in the first half.  Stroman recorded his first NFL interception.  Stroman is going to be a good player in this league.  However, have patience.  This kid is also a seventh round pick.  He appeared in 39 defensive snaps and 7 special teams snaps.   Overall, Stroman really had a strong game against Tampa.  He recorded 5 solo tackles, intercepted a pass and returned it 23 yards, and forced a fumble.  This kid is learning on the fly and that is good for Washington’s future.   On the season, Stroman has recorded 16 tackles, has 3 pass deflections, 1 interception, and 1 forced fumble.  You never want to be in position that a seventh rounder is making a start, but given the Redskins continued success, you can’t discount the experience either.  You will likely continue to see the young corners playing off receivers.  DC Greg Manusky simply does not want to give up the big play.  But, what’s the point?  Big play or drive down the field on 15 yard passes.  It is all the same.

S Troy Apke: Season ending Injured Reserve.

OL Geron Christian: Christian played a whopping three offensive snap counts to fill in at left tackle.  He will now miss the rest of the season with a torn MCL.  Rookie year is a complete wash out.
