Washington Capitals making some roster moves, Chimera leaves for New York

UPDATE:  Capitals have signed G Joe Cannata, D Darren Deitz, and F Christian Thomas to one-year, two-way deals.  Those three players will likely be assigned to the AHL Hershey Bears.

Now that the NHL Draft is complete, the Washington Capitals have begun making roster changes.  Here is what has occurred thus far.

Jason Chimera.  After seven seasons with the Capitals, the inevitable became reality today, as Jason Chimera signed a two-year deal with the New York Islanders.  He just was not in the cards for a roster spot this coming season.  Any chance of Chimera resigning effectively ended at the NHL Draft when the Capitals traded for C Lars Eller.

Michael Latta.  Latta also departs from last year’s roster.  Latta signed a one-year deal with the LA Kings.  The Caps opted to not offer Latta a qualifying offer.

Brett Connolly.  The Caps signed Brett Connolly to a one-year, $850k deal today.  Connolly has played in Boston and Tampa Bay since he was drafted in 2012.  Connolly had a career high 25 points lats season with Boston, that included 9 goals.

Tom Wilson.  The Capitals inked Wilson to a two-year contract extension.  Wilson’s deal is worth $4 million, breaking down to $1.75 million for next season and $2.25 million for 2017-18 season.  Last season, Wilson contributed 23 points (7 goals, 16 assists) and added 163 penalty minutes, which led the Caps and ranked third overall in the NHL.

Zach Sill resigned with the Caps with a two-year, two-way contract.  He played in 10 games for the Caps last season and scored 1 goal.  He scored 22 points (9 goals and 13 assists) for the AHL Hershey Bears.

Connor Hubbs.  The Caps have signed defenseman Connor Hubbs to a three-year entry level deal.  The 19 year-old defenseman played in 58 games last season with Regina Pats of the WHL and recorded 41 points (19 goals and 22 assists).  He ranked fifth among WHL defenseman in power play tallies.  Hubbs was a fifth round draft selection of the Caps in the 2015 NHL Draft.

Colby Williams.  Williams was a defense partner of Hubbs at Regina.  He was drafted in the sixth round of the 2015 NHL Draft by the Caps.  He scored 12 points in 19 games last season, after suffering an elbow injury.  He had 5 goals and 7 assists.

Washington has two remaining unsigned free agents:  Marcus Johanssonn and Dmitry Orlov.
