Report: Redskins to promote Matt Cavanaugh to Offensive Coordinator

The Washington Redskins are working to promote Quarterbacks Coach Matt Cavanaugh as their new Offensive Coordinator.  Cavanaugh would replace Sean McVay, who was hired by the LA Rams as their head coach.

Discuss this in our Redskins community.

Cavanaugh has spent the last two season in Washington coaching QB Kirk Cousins and the quarterbacks.  Cavanaugh has offensive coordinator experiencing, having been in that role for six years with the Baltimore Ravens and two years with the Chicago Bears.  Despite Cavanaugh’s anticipated promotion, play calling not he offense is expected to go to Head Coach Jay Gruden.   Cavanaugh gets significant credit for the turn around and development of QB Kirk Cousins.  Cousins has excelled the last two seasons under Cavanaugh’s direction.

In another anticipated move, the Redskins are expected to name SF 49ers assistant Kevin O’Connell as the new quarterbacks coach, replacing Cavanaugh.

In other coaching moves, as reported here, the Redskins promoted outside linebackers coach, Greg Manusky as their new Defensive Coordinator.  Manusky replaces Joe Barry, who was fired at the end of the season by the Redskins.  Manusky moved quickly to fill a coaching void, naming ex-49ers head coach Jim Tomsula as Defensive Line coach.  Manusky has to replace all other defensive assistants, who were fried along with Barry.
