Looking to Davis and Paul … With Jordan Reed out on NFL concussion protocol, the Redskins and QB Kirk Cousins will turn to Vernon Davis and Niles Paul in the passing game at tight end. Reed is a big loss. Fortunately for the Redskins, the depth at tight end is superb. Davis has caught 10 passes for 94 yards on the season. He gets the start today. Reed is such an integral part of the pass offense. The Redskins really need Davis to step up strong.
Cousins and the Deep Ball … The deep pass hasn’t been very effective for Cousins this season. That is certainly a key part of his success last season that has regressed this season. Cousins has struggled, consistently overthrowing DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon deep. To have success today, the Redskins need to get the football in the hands of Jackson. Jackson has averaged 21.8 yards per reception when playing the his former team. He has not been used effectively at all this season. The chemistry that Cousins and Jackson had last season is absent thus far in 2016. That needs to change. Perhaps the best threat in the passing game is Jamison Crowder. He is a speed burner and Cousins has to find a way to get him more pass targets.
Breeland Returns … Breeland has been injured since week two. We all know the struggles Breeland had against Pittsburgh and Dallas. He returns to the lineup today and eyes will be focused on Breeland in the Eagles passing game. Breeland has the skills and ability. He proved is last season. Hopefully while out nursing an injury, Breeland regained the confidence he had last year. Cornerback was suppose to be a position of strength, with Josh Norman and Breeland. Breeland has to get his head right. Today could be the day that turns his season around. Eagles QB Carson Wentz is completing 67.4% of his passes. The Redskins secondary will be tested.
What’s up with Trent Murphy … Murphy has been a beast for the Washington defense so far this season. Who saw that coming? He has proven this season to be an effective pass rusher, leading the Redskins in sacks with 4.5 Will he continue to excel today? The Redskins need to get pressure on the eagles’ rookie quarterback. Murphy could be a big part of that pressure. Murphy has had his hand in a sack in four consecutive games.
Especially special … The Redskins special teams have been superb this season. Redskins fans are not used tot hat. They are not giving up big returns, but are getting big returns. Jamison Crowder has become a serious threat in the punt return game, returning a punt for 82 yards last week for a TD, the first since Santana Moss did back in 2008. In 7 punt returns, Crowder is averaging 27.7 yards per return. The kick return unit has been all that shabby either. Chris Thompson has averaged 26.3 yard per return and Will Blackmon has averaged 37 yards per return. Dustin Hopkins is 13 for 14 on the season, second in the NFL in field goal percentage and fourth overall in the NFL in scoring
