Redskins sign 9 players

With their 2016 season ending earlier than hoped, the Washington Redskins got an early start on 2017 by signing nine players to future/reserve contracts.

Those players are:

  • DL A.J. Francis
  • WR Matt Hazel
  • LB Rufus Johnson
  • DL Joey Mbu
  • OL Ronald Patrick
  • DB Shak Randolph
  • TE Wes Saxton
  • WR Kendal Thompson
  • T Isaiah Williams

Most of these guys are practice squad regulars and you might be quick to dismiss them. However, recall that DL Ziggy Hood, who became a starter (playing out of position) at nose tackle for Washington was signed in February of 2016 to a future/reserve contract. In other words, there could be a contributor or two on that list.

You probably recognized Kendal Thompson, who caught a touchdown pass to win a preseason game for the Skins. However, keep your eye on LB Rufus Johnson and DL Joey Mbu. Mbu is a 310-pound nose tackle who has played two games since becoming a pro in 2015 and he may figure in the mix at a position where the Skins have a glaring need. Johnson played very well for the New England Patriots in the preseason back in 2015, but he never caught on. He’s got a very large frame, at 6’5″ and 280 pounds, and we know GM Scot McCloughan’s view of football players is bigger is (usually) better.
