Papelbon is signed through the 2016 season and will be a free agent in 2017. He has a career-worst 4.37 ERA in 37 games this season, with a 2-4 record and 19 saves.
Once the Nationals executed a trade to acquire closer Mark Melancon, the writing was on the wall. The Papelbon experiment was the worst trade of the Mike Rizzo era and was bound to end soon.
