Danny Espinosa did it again. For the second time in four games, Espinosa hit a grand slam and two home runs in a game, switch hitting at that, to lead the Nationals to a 12-1 rout of the Reds.
Thankfully, Espinosa is on my fantasy baseball team. In this period, at least in my league, they netted me 77 points. In the last four games, Espinosa is 7 for 18 at the plate with four home runs and a whopping 15 RBI. Today’s two home runs gives Espinosa 18 homers on the season. That leads the Nationals. Who saw that one coming?
The story should have been about the return of Stephen Strasburg from the DL. However, Espinosa stole the storyline. But, Strasburg put up a terrific start, pitching 6.2 hitless and scoreless innings on 109 pitches. It was a terrific outing that improved Strasburg to 11-0 on the season. The pitching staff carried the no hitter into the eighth inning before Matt Belisle was tagged for three hits and a run.
Offensively, the Nationals offense was the show, smacking 15 hits and scoring 12 runs thanks to 6 homers. Those homers came from Espinosa (18), Stephen Drew (7), Wilson Ramos (13), Anthony Rendon (8), and Bryce Haper (17). Ramos remained on a tear, going 3-4 at the plate, hitting his 13th home run, driving in 2 RBI, and scoring 3 runs. Daniel Murphy was 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
