The Washington Capitals have made a draft day trade, dealing their second round draft selection to th Montreal Canadians for F Lars Eller. The trade for the second round draft picks leaves the Caps with five draft selections in this draft. The trade also includes the Caps second round pick in 2018.
Eller scored 13 goals and added 13 assists in 79 games for the Canadians last season. The 27-year-old toward has two-years remaining on his current contract and comes with a $3.5-million salary cap hit. The trade hits a point for Washington in that it boosts their bottom six forwards, a major priority for GM Brian MacLellan this offseason. The Caps have had a revolving door at third line center, going back and forth with Jay Beagle, Marcus Johansonn, and Mike Richards. The Caps are hoping that Ellers can lock down the third line centermsm position. Johansonn is aribitration eligible and are concerned with the potential arbitration award that could be given to Johansonn. Still, MacLellan is hopeful a long term deal can be worked out for the former Caps top draft pick.
Eller has has been with th Habs all six of his pro seasons.
